Pingtang FAST Telescope Supporting Facilities

Pingtang FAST Telescope Supporting Facilities

FAST Supporting Project in Pingtang, Guizhou is located in Astronomy Town, Kedu Town, Pingtang, Qiannan Prefecture. It is the supporting scientific research and sightseeing public building complex for the 500m Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (China FAST). It includes research complex, observation platform and astronomy exhibition hall. The facade adopts low-interference glass curtain wall with gray metal panels. It strictly meets electromagnetic shielding requirements for radio quiet zone, taking into account mountain wind & rain resistance, lightning protection, energy saving and astronomical architectural aesthetics, serving national major astronomical research infrastructure.

Design Challenge

Curtain Wall System
Stick low-electromagnetic-interference glass curtain wall, aluminum panel curtain wall, decorative enclosure system for observation platform
Main Materials
Low-radiation double-silver Low-E insulated tempered glass, fluorocarbon coated aluminum panel, thermal-break aluminum alloy profile, low-interference sealant, lightning-proof anti-corrosion hardware
Performance
Comply with GB/T 21086, meet wind resistance, water & air tightness and sound insulation under mountain heavy rain and strong wind; control electromagnetic reflection interference to satisfy special requirements of radio quiet zone, equipped with complete lightning protection structure
Construction Technology
BIM mountain terrain modeling to optimize curtain wall joints according to mountain slope conditions; factory prefabrication of components, hoisting construction on mountain site, strict control of electromagnetic reflection, lightning protection joints and facade airtightness

Engineering Solution

  1. Low-electromagnetic-interference curtain wall system reduces electromagnetic wave reflection from building facade, protects observation environment of FAST radio telescope and meets strict requirements of radio quiet zone
  2. BIM mountain condition detailed design optimizes joints for strong wind, heavy rain and lightning in karst mountain area to improve durability and safety of curtain wall
  3. Curtain wall meets daylighting needs of scientific research office and astronomy exhibition hall. High-performance enclosure reduces energy consumption and adapts to operation conditions in remote mountain area
  4. Simple and restrained facade integrates with karst mountain landscape. As supporting building of national major scientific and technological infrastructure, it forms a display window for astronomy popular science
